SAND CLEANING: SMART MACHINE VS. HARROW
(South Bend, Nebraska) – By Susan Stern – Sand Sifters’ Smart machine cleans a beach – under and on top of – the surface. A harrow or rake does not clean sand: it only breaks up clods or lumps and smooths out the surface.
“A client had a bunch of weeds on a shoreline. She wanted me to run a harrow along the beach. I had to explain what our sifting business is, that we actually clean the beach. She was pleased,” says Nick Gollin, General Manager of Sand Sifters of South Bend, Nebraska.
Differences – Harrow Vs. Smart Machine
Typically when someone rakes a beach with a harrow, an agricultural implement, you generally pull a rake behind a four -wheeler or a tractor. The objectives are to smooth the sand, and fluff it up – to leave a finer finish. Other times harrowing a beach is used to control weeds. The downside to harrowing a beach is that the tool does not actually clean the sand. A harrow is not capable of separating debris found on beaches: pop can lids, river rocks, glass shards and so on.
Harrowing Doesn’t Clean
“When you rake a beach, you’re pretty much putting a Band-Aid on the problem. The sand is still dirty under the surface. In all reality, harrowing actually mixes trash and other debris – into and under the sand. So while your eye may not see it, the rubbish remains under the surface. It will eventually reappear with use and weather,” emphasizes Gollin.

Smart Machine Cleans
The Sand Sifters’ smart machine does way better than a harrow. It cleans 8 inches under the sand surface, and separates particles that don’t belong there like weeds and garbage. Plus, the machine increases sand volume, making the beach softer and fluffier. Debris is hauled away.

“After the beach cleaner goes through to remove any debris, we here at Sand Sifters go back through with a harrow. We do both: sand cleaning and harrowing. Together the smart machine and harrow make the sand soft to the touch and clean under the surface,” notes Gollin.

We sifted up and hauled away quite a few loads of rocks that have continually multiplied within the two horse arenas.
